2048 Obesity Doomsday or a Defeatist Attitude?
BOCA RATON, Fla., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ — What: By the year 2030, 86 percent of American adults will be overweight according to a recently released study published in the journal Obesity. By 2048, the study suggests all U.S. adults will be at least mildly overweight(1).
Who: Dr. Sasson E. Moulavi, Bariatric Medicine practitioner of over 14 years, agrees that the obesity epidemic facing the U.S. is serious. Dr. Moulavi holds Board Certification in Bariatric Medicine and is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. He has completed the Annual Practical Approaches to the Treatment of Obesity at Harvard University. After treating thousands of patients with his weight management program, Smart for Life, Dr. Moulavi has identified factors to blame for this dismal state of well-being.
Why: Dr. Moulavi identifies three factors contributing to the obesity trend. They are:
— Lack of portion control: A study conducted by the American Journal of Public Health confirms that a warped perspective of a reasonable amount of food and sights fast food’s current portions as being 2 to 5 times larger than their originally served size. In less than a decade, what were considered McDonald’s “Supersize” french fries are now a size “Large”(2). On today’s Early Show, learning portion control through different diets was discussing, including Dr. Moulavi’s own Smart For Life.
— Caloric Punch: A caloric punch refers to a person’s and food industry’s tendency to pile on the calories to what alone would be a reasonable food. For instance, a medium size potato is around 150 calories; topped with sour cream, salt, bacon and cheese, this becomes a health hazard. At times, these calories are hidden.
— Food Addiction: People’s addiction to food is comparable to drug, alcohol and smoking addictions and should be treated as such. Overweight individuals experience changes in their bodies regarding insulin, sugar and the different hormones, giving them an insatiable appetite.
