Centene Foundation for Quality Healthcare Awards Grant to Community Health Advocacy Partnership

Posted on: Wednesday, 13 August 2008, 09:01 CDT

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Centene Foundation for Quality Healthcare announced today that it has awarded a $29,000 grant to Community Health Advocacy Partnership (C.H.A.P.) to support the use of mobile prevention stations staffed by certified health educators. Community Health Advocacy Partnership's mission is to advocate, promote, and protect the health and safety of underinsured and underserved individuals and families in Hillsborough County, Fla., by facilitating access to quality health services, providing intervention and education, and forming strategic partnerships with public and private entities with a shared vision and mission.

Access to quality, culturally-competent healthcare remains a critical issue. The burden of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension and cardiovascular disease is greater for the underinsured and uninsured due to lack of access to consistent primary care and follow-up treatment. Preventive measures can be difficult without a system of support that is community-based and cost effective. C.H.A.P. works with certified health educators and advocates to provide a variety of screenings including cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and body mass index in neighborhoods of Hillsborough County where at least 15% of the population is uninsured. C.H.A.P. volunteers also provide health education sessions. Participants that receive screenings and education benefit from the disease management, education, counseling and referrals that are provided.

"Timely health screenings, coupled with education, enable individuals to make informed decisions about their healthcare," said Kathy Bradley-Wells, president, Centene Foundation for Quality Healthcare. "The need for trusted community-organizations, like C.H.A.P., assuming roles as educators, advocates and facilitators is critical to bridging the gaps that exists for underinsured and uninsured populations."

Ronald T. Brookins, executive director and ceo of C.H.A.P. states that this program is the first step towards C.H.A.P.'s vision that "all residents of Hillsborough County live well and have access to resources needed to ensure wellness across generations. As a community-based and community-focused organization, we are committed to providing convenient access to quality health care services where people live, learn, worship and play."
