HONOLULU, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ — Hoana Medical, Inc. announced a partnership with Kahala Nui, a Life Care Retirement Community in Honolulu, Hawai’i, to deliver cutting-edge vigilance technology to patients and residents at their onsite Hi’olani Care Center. Kahala Nui joins a list of progressive healthcare facilities by providing the LifeBed(TM) Patient Vigilance System (LifeBed) technology that tracks a patient’s or residents’ vital signs, while minimizing the risk of falling out of bed, a major health risk with elderly patients. The LifeBed identifies patients as they begin to deteriorate and immediately notifies the nursing staff — all invisible to the patient since there is no physical connection to the patient whatsoever.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), each year, an average nursing home with 100 beds reports 100 to 200 falls. About 1,800 older adults living in nursing homes die each year from fall-related injuries. Those who experience non-fatal falls can suffer injuries, have difficulty getting around, and have a reduced quality of life. About one out of five hip fracture patients dies within a year of their injury. Early recognition of fall risk, and instituting methods to prevent falls, are key components of a successful fall prevention and management strategy. Falls can be deadly to frail elders — preventing them is a critical step toward ensuring the health and well-being of our elders. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that a 10 percent decrease in falls translates into about 1,800 fewer injuries, less discomfort and disability for the elderly, and about $21 million less in health care costs in the region where the interventions took place. Nationwide, there are more than 1.9 million elderly people living in nursing homes. The CDC also states that as many as 370,000 elderly living in nursing homes will die from falls each year, resulting in a cost of more than $1 billion for treatment of falls alone.
