Physical Training Makes Life in Pits Easier to Endure
Five days a week Panther Racing’s crewmembers get together early in the morning for a workout. The team’s two drivers — Tomas Scheckter and Tomas Enge — are part of the exercise program.
With certified athletic trainer Tim Drudge leading the way, the team lifts weights three times a week. The other two days, the crew works on agility and hand-speed drills. Aerobic conditioning also is part of the regimen.
Drudge, who has been working with the team in full- and part-time capacities the last four seasons, also works at St. Vincent Sports Performance Center, which is affiliated with the Indianapolis hospital.
The workouts aren’t the only way Drudge helps out. He also makes sure the team is eating properly and staying hydrated.
“It’s very important for our drivers and crews, who work 12- to 16-hour days on race weekends, to be fueled correctly,” Drudge says. “Crews have to be on top of their games. If not, fatigue sets in.”
