Wayport Inc. announced today a new agreement with HealthSouth Corporation, the nation's largest provider of inpatient rehabilitation services, to provide public and private applications and services, including complimentary wireless Internet access at the company's rehabilitation hospitals.
Wayport enables public and private-side applications, services and devices on a single converged network and will offer the service throughout each hospital, including patient rooms, cafeterias, waiting rooms and other common areas. Twelve trial locations have already been installed and are operational today. HealthSouth currently operates 94 rehabilitation hospitals.
"Wayport brings a unique service offering to our hospitals. We are pleased to be able to offer free wireless Internet access to our patients and their families," said Rusty Yeager, HealthSouth deputy chief information officer. "This new service will allow patients and visitors to use their wireless-enabled personal computers to stay connected."
Wi-Fi Internet access for patients, guests, physicians and staff is free. Public access is complemented by Wayport's NaviCity, a unique Yahoo!-based portal that serves up location-specific information, allowing visitors to view local restaurants and services, local ads, local content and other features. In addition, each location will offer at least one public PC station, Wayport's CyberCenter express unit.
On the private side, Wayport will provide WAN failover services, helping the hospitals keep their network uptime at a maximum and mitigating the risks involved with network failures or outages.
Wayport's expertise in enhancing patient and physician services for healthcare includes design, installation, support and maintenance services aligned with our clients' specific requirements. Support services include 24X7 network monitoring and a 24X7 in house call center for end-user support. HealthSouth serves more than 250,000 patients annually through its network of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, outpatient rehabilitation satellites and home health agencies.
"We are pleased to be able to work with HealthSouth as we continue to develop applications and services dedicated to the needs of healthcare professionals and facilities," said Kevin McKeand, vice president of healthcare for Wayport. "It's exciting to see more and more healthcare providers embrace the benefits of public and private Wi-Fi applications in their hospitals."
