HealthSteps to Begin Fall Classes

LEWISTON – HealthSteps, a health education and prevention program for adults at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, has announced its fall specialty classes.

HealthSteps has a wide range of classes with the core membership fee, and also a variety of specialty classes including the following:

Lose With Me: A 12-week weight loss session focused on helping you make healthier lifestyle choices. Classes include goal setting, exercise recommendations, nutrition education and peer support. Noon- 12:30 p.m., Wednesdays, Sept. 17 through Dec. 3 in the conference room at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion. Cost: $50

Intermediate Bellydancing: Dress comfortably in workout clothing or a long flowing skirt and comfortable top. Stockings or bare feet are preferred. Mondays, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Sept. 8, 22, 29 and Oct. 6, in the Lepage large conference room, 99 Campus Ave. Cost: $45.

Advanced Bellydancing: Dress comfortably in workout clothing or a long flowing skirt and comfortable top. Stockings or bare feet are preferred. Mondays, 6:30-7:30 p.m., on Oct. 20 and 27, Nov. 3 and 10, in the Lepage large conference room, 99 Campus Ave. Cost: $45.

Ballroom Dancing (designed for women): Have you always wanted to learn ballroom but don’t have a partner? Get a taste of popular ballroom dances in this specially designed class, no partner needed. Learn the ladies portion of basic ballroom dance steps and patterns in line dance formation. Wednesdays, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. from Sept. 10 to Oct. 8. Lepage large conference room, 99 Campus Ave. Cost: $35.

Racquetball: Registration begins on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 9:30 a.m. Specific time slots are available for registration Monday through Friday on the hour for an hour from 6 a.m. until noon. Merrill Gymnasium, Bates College. Cost: With HealthSteps Core Membership, $14.00 for the entire fall session Without Core Membership: 1-hour, 1x/week = $70 or 1-hour, 2x/week = $112

Tennis: Registration (via walk-in or phone) begins Thursday, Sept. 4 at 8:30 a.m. Time slots available Monday-Friday, 6-7 a.m., 7- 8:30 a.m., 8:30-9:30 a.m., 9:30-11 a.m., 11 a.m.-noon. The following guidelines apply: Singles, maximum of 2 hours pe week; Doubles, maximum of 3 hours per week. Merrill Gymnasium, Bates College. Cost: With Core Membership, $14.00 for the entire fall session or Without Core Membership, $108.

Line Dancing: Learn how to do fun and easy line dances. No partner or previous dance experience required. Wednesdays, 6:30- 7:30 p.m. from Oct. 22 to Nov. 19. Lepage large conference room, 99 Campus Ave. Cost: $30.

Exercise for People with Arthritis: This class helps individuals improve range of motion, flexibility, muscle strength, posture, balance, coordination, and endurance. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30- 10:15 a.m. (5 week sessions) starting Sept. 9. Bank of America Room, Women’s Health Pavilion, 330 Sabattus St. Cost: $22 or free with HealthSteps Core Membership

T’ai Chi: The effects of T’ai Chi include increased balance, better circulation, improved hand/eye coordination, reduced blood pressure and more. Thursdays, 5-6 p.m., Sept. 4 to Oct. 9. Lepage large conference room, 99 Campus Ave. Cost: $55.

Qigong: Over the years we tend to deplete our Qi, our life force, which causes us to feel tired, anxious, worried and somewhat sluggish. In this practice, you will visualize and activate Qi with both quiet and active Qigong. Thursdays, 6:15-7:15 p.m., Sept. 4 to Oct. 9. Lepage large conference room, 99 Campus Ave. Cost: $55.

SAFE Plan: Age and ability appropriate self-defense. Being safe is a matter of being prepared with an effective plan. Tuesdays, 5-6 p.m., Sept. 9-30. Lepage large conference room, 99 Campus Ave. Cost: $45.

Relaxercise: Rejuvenation through relaxation promotes wellness and quality of life. This seminar adds years to your life and life to your years. Tuesdays, 6:15-7:15 p.m., Sept. 9-30. Lepage large conference room, 99 Campus Ave. Cost: $45.

Senior Fitness: This one-hour class provides participants with a safe and effective workout that includes a warm-up, cardiovascular component, resistance training to build strength, balance and flexibility exercises. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:15-10:15 a.m. or 10:30-11:30 a.m. between Sept. 8. St. Mary’s Nutrition Center of Maine, 208 Bates St. Cost: $30.

Ashtanga Yoga: Primary Standing Series: This beginner class is an athletic vinyasa format (meaning poses and breath energetically flow together into the next sequence of movements). With consistent practice, each student will gain body strength, increased flexibility, and peace and clarity of mind. Wear loose, not baggy clothing, or a leotard. Please avoid eating 1-2 hours before class and bring a yoga mat and water bottle. Wednesdays, 5-6 p.m., Oct. 29- Dec. 3. Lepage large conference room, 99 Campus Ave. Cost: $45.
