Stephens Memorial Earns Public Service Award

August 27, 2008

NORWAY – Western Maine Health President and Chief Executive Officer Timothy A. Churchill announced that Stephens Memorial Hospital has been recognized by the Maine Humanities Council for its exemplary public service as a Literature & Medicine Program Partner Hospital.

Literature & Medicine is a book discussion program devised by the Maine Humanities Council. Deborah Clark, librarian at Western Maine Health shared that the Literature & Medicine program at the hospital has been going on for five years, with as many as 20 participants each time it meets, including physicians, nursing and other hospital staff as well as hospital administrators.

The group is free to employees and is lead by a facilitator, usually a college professor. Book choices range from novels to non- fiction to poetry and usually have relevance to health care or medicine, leading the group to think about the human side of the care they provide patients.
