Store Holds Shower for the Public

August 29, 2008

New or expectant parents are invited to Babies-R-Us Saturday for a communitywide baby shower. \ The shower, sponsored by Doctors Hospital’s Living Well program, will include prizes, contests and information from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday inside the Evans baby supply store at 4225 Washington Road in the Mullins Crossing shopping center.

“We’re doing this as part of our Living Well program, an in- depth effort to educate people in the CSRA about how to live better, be more healthy,” said Anne Cordeiro, the community relations manager for the hospital. “So we came up with this idea as a way to promote healthy moms and babies.”

The shower will feature contests, including the Maternity and Baby Fashion Show at 11 a.m.; the Baby Derby at 2:30 p.m.; and the Diaper Daddy Contest at 1 p.m., where fathers or fathers-to-be will race to diaper a baby.

“We’re wondering which men will be brave enough to come out and compete,” Cordeiro said.

Derby winners will receive a $50 or $100 Babies-R-Us gift card, and Diaper Daddy contest winners will compete for boxes of diapers.

The aim of the baby shower also is to inform through talks by area experts. Pediatrician Carl Kappes will speak about the Basics of Infant Care at 10:30 a.m., and pediatrician A. Reginald Pilcher will present “What You Need to Know About Immunization” at 1:45 p.m. A representative from Medela, a manufacturer of breastfeeding and postnatal supplies, will speak about breastfeeding at noon.

Exhibitors also will be on site promoting their products and giving away door prizes, Cordeiro said. \ Parents and expectant parents can register for prize drawings, Cordeiro said.
