Struck Down By Superbug ; CASE STUDY

August 29, 2008

PENSIONER Doreen Ford was one of more than 90 patients who died after contracting C.diff during Britain’s worst ever outbreak.

She caught the bug at Maidstone Hospital two years ago while having chemotherapy for her breast cancer.

The 77-year-old was put in an isolation ward and given antibiotics – but the infection proved resilient.

Doreen spent the next six weeks in and out of hospital before being readmitted and dying of septicaemia.

A report later found a string of failures had led to more than 1,000 patients being infected with the bug at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in Kent.

Doreen’s daughter-in-law, the former Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker, has since been campaigning for better hospital hygiene.
