In the spirit of good citizenship, community and care, MultiLing Corporation donated care kits for mothers and newborns in the New Born Intensive Care Unit at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center today.

About one year ago, Gabriela Poletti gave birth to her first child, a son named Alex. As any new mother would be, she was excited and happy to bring this new life into the world. However, the first twenty-two days of Alex’s life were spent in the New Born Intensive Care Unit, also known as NICU at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah. Alex was born with Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome and respiratory distress.

Little did Gabriela know, when she and her baby found themselves in NICU, there was a team of “graduates,” babies who had experienced similar challenges at NICU, yet were released and went on to grow healthy and happy. Their mothers, along with the NICU Coordinator, have formed a support group for families that find themselves at NICU. The graduates’ mothers provide care packages for other families who sit for days on end with their babies, as well as a range of different activities for them to participate in — such as pizza nights and scrapbooking classes.

The care packages that MultiLing Corporation is delivering contain essentials like shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste and lotion, as well as thank you cards, and big handkerchiefs that new mothers take home and sleep with next to their bodies. They then take the handkerchiefs back to the babies in NICU, who usually cannot be held due to their fragile conditions, and therefore lack contact with their mothers. The handkerchiefs are placed next to the baby, and they have the mother’s smell on them. This helps the baby and mother grow a bond while the baby is in its fragile state and cannot be held.

After a long, stressful and painful twenty-two days, Gabriela was able to take Alex home. She is pleased to report that he is a happy and healthy 20-month-old, for which she gives thanks each day. Gabriela then decided she too would do something special for the people at NICU. She wanted to put together care packages like those she had received. She lead a project to gather 40 kits, and her family at MultiLing was most supportive and helpful in donating items and putting together the kits.

So today, MultiLing will be delivering care packages for the families and babies who are at the NICU at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

“I am so thankful and blessed to be able to pay forward this service that was rendered to me and Alex,” said Gabriela Poletti, a Team Leader at MultiLing Corporation. “I know what a difference this made to me and my family, and I am happy that I work for a company who not only supported me throughout the birth and complications of my son, but is assisting me in doing this project. I hope that this will inspire many more people to support the families that are going through similar experiences.”
