AN operation date has been set for a patient who refused to leave her hospital bed in protest after her surgery appointment was cancelled four times.

Irene Gannon, 68, from Dinas Powys, launched her one-woman protest at Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales on Monday, after her gall bladder operation was again cancelled at the last minute.

She left hospital yesterday after being given an official letter confirming her operation would now take place on Wednesday.

She said: “There were so many patients coming in and someone would have had to sleep on a trolley because I was taking up a bed.”

But Irene only agreed to leave after being given an official letter confirming her admittance to hospital on Tuesday ahead of an operation the following day.

“To me this is a contract, so they have got to stick to it,” she said.
