McGuire, F.A., Boyd, R.K., & Tedrick, R.E. (2004).Leisure and Aging: Ulyssean Living in Later Life (3rd ed.) Champaign, IL: Sagamore Publishing (804 Neil St., 61820; [800] 327-5557, [217] 359- 5975 [FAX]; ISBN 1-57167-552-3; paperback, 318 pgs, $54.95).
Older individuals today are generally healthier, more financially secure, and independent than previous cohorts. There is growing need for leisure professionals to understand correlation between the aging process and relationship to leisure. Ways leisure might contribute positively to later life are identified. Rather than leisure being seen as merely a substitute for loss of activities engaged in earlier life, the proposition is made that leisure can provide new pathways for growth and development. Links between the aging process and leisure to Ulyssean living, willingness to be open to new ideas, and opportunities to seek new adventures are explored.
Five chapters help develop an understanding of what happens as people age-the aging journey; and theoretical, biological, cognitive, and psychological processes in aging. Three chapters explore leisure and its-role in later life-importance of leisure, enhancing the leisure experience (motivation and constraints), and time and activities in retirement. Four chapters examine environments in which aging occurs-ethnicity and gender impact on leisure for older adults, living environments, leisure and recreation in long term care, and community environment.
Specific sections address exercise, motor and recreation for physical activities, and travel. Included are topics such as theoretical perspectives on sport and aging, levels of sporting participation by older adults, sport performances in older adults, formal competitions (i.e., senior games and masters events).
