America's Health Centers to Convene in New Orleans
Posted on: Tuesday, 9 September 2008, 12:00 CDT
Nearly 2,000 representatives from Community Health Centers across the country will assemble in New Orleans, LA for the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) 2008 Annual Community Health Institute (CHI) and Expo. The national gathering will take place September 12th through 16th and focus on a host of key operational, policy and financial issues surrounding health care reform and challenges in providing health care access to the nation's medically underserved and uninsured in today's difficult economic environment. Featured speakers at the conference are Democratic political strategist and New Orleans native Donna Brazile, and Dan Bartlett, former Senior Advisor to President George Bush, who will spar on how the Presidential candidates differ on key issues at the morning plenary session on Monday, September 15th at 10:00 am.
Community Health Centers are the family doctor to 18 million people in more than 6,600 communities, including millions who are uninsured or lack other sources of care. Health centers are poised to play a critical role in Louisiana as a viable solution to the state's broken charity hospital system. The state's lawmakers have already taken the bold step of investing over $41 million in funding as a down payment on an ambitious plan to rebuild the health care infrastructure with the expansion of health centers. Community Health Centers nationwide are also moving forward a plan, ACCESS for All America, that calls for enhanced federal investment to expand the community health system to serve 30 million people by 2015 - nearly twice the number served today.
