The Great American Weight Loss Challenge will stop in Charleston Thursday through Saturday as part of a 75-city tour encouraging people to sign up for a 12-week plan that provides the tools to lose weight in a healthy way.
Sponsored by the nation's milk processors and dairy farmers, the event consists of free wellness events and research information that shows a connection between milk and weight loss.
The event kicks off 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Charleston Town Center, where people may sign up for the Great American Weight Loss Challenge. The city with the most participants will win $25,000 for health-related community improvements and be featured in a milk mustache ad to run nationally in "Ladies' Home Journal."
There also will be free health assessments administered by local registered dieticians, sampling of milk products by Broughton Foods and Valley Rich, fitness tips by Curves representatives and souvenir milk mustache photos.
Activities also take place 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the Curves at River Walk Plaza in South Charleston and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Southridge Wal-Mart.
The Great American Weight Loss Challenge is a 12-week, reduced- calorie healthy eating plan that includes drinking 24 ounces of milk every day.
The research behind the weight-loss plan was funded by various grants and programs, including the National Institutes of Health.
