New Urgent Care Clinic Opening Friday, September 12th in Watts-Willowbrook By Charles Drew University

WHAT: Opening of new Charles Drew University Urgent Care Clinic designed to provide residents of South Los Angeles - the most medically underserved urban area in the entire country - with access to quality, affordable health care. One of a substantial network of urgent and specialty care clinics planned for the area, developed and operated by Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU), filling a vital need in the community since the closure of MLK-Harbor Medical Center. Many patients in the area, underinsured or uninsured, have previously had to depend on County health care facilities. WHO: Dr. Susan Kelly, President and CEO of Charles Drew University, will preside over the ceremonies, along with Bart Williams, Esq., Chairman of CDU's Board of Trustees, Dr. Richard Baker, Dean of CDU's College of Medicine and Dr. Gail Orum-Alexander, Dean of CDU's College of Science and Health. Also attending: -- Mervyn M. Dymally, former California Assemblyman, State Senator, Lt. Governor and U.S. Congressman -- Fabian Nunez, former California Assembly Speaker -- Mrs. Lillian Mobley, long-time community activist and Chair of the Black Health Task Force -- Martha Valverde, CDU Trustee and President, HealthChoices of California Insurance Services -- Timothy Watkins, Sr., President and CEO of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC) WHEN: Friday, September 12, 2008, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for media tours and interviews; event presentations for invited guests begin at 10:00 a.m. WHERE: 11722 South Wilmington Avenue (at 118th Street) in the Kenneth Hahn Plaza, Los Angeles, California 90059, two blocks from the Wilmington Avenue exit off the 105 Freeway. Directions from Los Angeles: Take the 110 or 405 Freeway south, to the 105 Freeway east (toward Norwalk). Exit Wilmington Avenue, turn right to 118th Street, and left into Hahn Center parking lot.
