EMS Chiefs of Canada Call on Canada’s Federal Leaders to Recognize Importance of Emergency Medical Care in Everyday Lives of Average Canadians
Today, EMS Chiefs from coast to coast called on Canada's federal leaders to demonstrate real leadership and recognize the importance of emergency medical care in the everyday lives of average Canadians.
"Paramedics are at the centre of public safety and emergency medical care in Canada," says Bruce Farr, president of the EMS Chiefs of Canada. "It's time for federal leaders to recognize the importance paramedics play in the everyday lives of average Canadians."
Paramedics are Canada's first responders in a crisis and the only emergency medical care providers who still make house calls. We are a reliable and constant force in communities from coast to coast; from remote and rural areas to the country's largest cities.
Over the coming weeks as Canadians prepare to cast their ballot, EMS Chiefs across Canada reach out to candidates of all political stripes in the communities we serve. Local EMS Chiefs will outline the central role Paramedics play in keeping us safe and healthy.
Paramedics need stable and sustainable funding to keep Canadians safe in an emergency. Despite the central role paramedics play across the country, the Canada Health Act makes no mention of this vital service.
Through the creation of a national Office of the Chief Paramedic to advise Public Safety Canada and other departments within the federal government on emergency medical care and public safety issues, the Government of Canada could ensure it receives the best possible advice as it moves forward with initiatives designed to improve emergency medical care in Canada.
"Paramedics are there when you need them most," says Farr. "EMS Chiefs will work constructively with government to advance public safety and emergency medical care solutions for all Canadians."
The Emergency Medical Service Chiefs of Canada (EMSCC) is a national voice dedicated to advancing public safety and emergency medical care in Canada. Made up of EMS Chiefs from coast to coast, we represent the frontline of emergency medical care in Canada.
