Athena Nominees Revealed

BLOOMINGTON - An event next week will recognize women's achievements in business and honor the recipient of the 2008 Athena Award.The Women's Division of the McLean County Chamber of Commerce will present the award at the 6 p.m. Thursday dinner at the Parke Hotel & Conference Center in Bloomington. A pre-event reception will be at 5:15 p.m.
The keynote speaker is Linda Garbe, president of The Garbe Creative Group in Towanda.

This year, four people have been nominated to receive the Athena Award, which is given to a person who inspires women to achieve their full potential. Nominees are:
Hood is the executive assistant for planning and system services at BroMenn Healthcare.
Her responsibilities include clinical research management, government and regulatory affairs and property and project management.
She also is the health protection administrator for the 10- member BroMenn Healthcare Institutional Review Board, which is responsible for the protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects involved in clinical research.
Hood is a member of National Association Medical Staff Services, Illinois Association Medical Staff Services, American Hospital Association, International Association of Administrative Professionals and Illinois Hospital Association Executive Secretaries Society. She also is involved in various other Twin City organizations.
Bushnell is a co-owner of The Garlic Press and The Garlic Press Market Cafe, a retail gourmet food, equipment and gift store and a cafe business in uptown Normal.
In the more than 20 years since Bushnell opened The Garlic Press, she has seen - and been involved with - many changes in the business district. Bushnell also has guided and encouraged her staff at The Garlic Press in their leadership endeavors, as well as their interest and love of cooking.
Bushnell is a member of Uptown Normal Business Association, Uptown Parking Management Committee and Uptown Design Review Commission. She regularly volunteers and supports various fundraisers in Bloomington-Normal.
Clifford is a breast health navigator in comprehensive breast service with Community Cancer Center in Normal.
She became a registered nurse in 1983 after she graduated from Methodist Medical Center of Illinois School of Nursing and has worked in the field of oncology nursing for 12 years. In October 2004, she became a certified oncology nurse, subsequently becoming certified as a breast health navigator in September 2006.
As a facilitator of the breast tumor board and breast support groups, Clifford helps women understand treatment options and helps to ensure the best breast cancer services are available in the community.
Her professional memberships include Oncology Nursing Society and American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology. Her community involvements include Women's Health Fair, State Farm Insurance Cos. Survivor's Group and Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University.
Fleming, owner of Fleming Financial Solutions, established her company five years ago and is a licensed insurance and financial adviser.
As a business owner, she accommodates employees with the flexible scheduling that is important for today's families.
Fleming has been a member of the Soroptimist International Bloomington-Normal for 20 years. Some of her community affiliations are liaison for the Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence, Project Oz, Boys & Girls Club, East Central Illinois Area Agency of Aging, Twin City Tigers Youth Football League and AVERT.
