A NEW centre of excellence for brain research has been officially opened at Edinburgh University.

The GBP 3.4 million centre will advance research into how ageing affects mental capabilities such as memory, decision-making and intelligence.

The Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology will bring together the work of scholars in psychology and medical science.

The research will include examining the impact of mental abilities, genes and hormones on lifelong health and wellbeing. It will also investigate brain structure through brain imaging.

A seminar took place to mark the launch, with experts from the colleges of humanities and social science, and medicine and veterinary medicine outlining their research interests. They also looked at how this research could develop at the centre.

The centre’s director, Professor Ian Deary, said: “The creation of this new multidisciplinary centre is a major encouragement for our research into the effects of cognition on ageing, and vice versa. It will go a long way towards bringing together our exciting current work, and create opportunities for new collaborations within and beyond the university.”
