Newborn Found in Trash at Phoenix School
A newborn baby was found abandoned in a trash can at a Phoenix middle school, fire officials say.
Phoenix Fire Department officials said the principal at Osborn Middle School found the child in the garbage can Tuesday after hearing a muffled noise from the receptacle, Phoenix's KPHO-TV reported Wednesday.
Officials said the umbilical cord was still attached to the infant boy, who was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Victor Rangle of the Phoenix Fire Department said the incident came despite the fact the Arizona city has a Safe Haven law that allows a parent to hand a newborn child over at certain public sites such as hospitals or police stations without facing potential prosecution.
"There is an alternative if you get to (that) point and are that desperate," Rangle told KPHO-TV.
The TV station reported that police suspect an unidentified 14-year-old girl is the newborn's mother.
