Aid Drive at Hell Hospital

September 17, 2008

By OLIVIA KELLEHER

AN Irish charity has launched an appeal after stumbling across a “hospital from hell”.

On its latest humanitarian mission to Kazakhstan, Cork charity Greater Chernobyl Cause found Red Cross personnel desperately trying to care for patients in horrifying conditions.

The care home in Semipalatinsk is deprived of essential medical supplies, proper bedding and basic food. The chronically ill are thrown together with social outcasts, the mentally disabled and radiation sickness victims.

Charity chief Fiona Corcoran said: “The budget for this year is EUR52,000 from which they pay staff, heating and water costs.

“This leaves just four cents a day to provide food for each of the 40 patients.”

Donations can be sent to The Greater Chernobyl Cause, Bessborough Centre, Blackrock, Cork.
