Diageo Supports ‘Girl Talk’ Program in Phoenix, Arizona
PHOENIX, Sept. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Diageo, the world’s leading spirits, wine, and beer company, is proud to support Julie Foudy, former US Women’s Soccer Team star and a role model for young girls across the country, as she introduced the ‘Girl Talk’ program today to students today at Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix. Designed by The Century Council, a not-for-profit organization funded by Diageo and other distillers dedicated to fighting underage drinking and drunk driving, the ‘Girl Talk’ program helps raise awareness among teenage girls about the dangers of drinking.
The genesis of the ‘Girl Talk’ program is based on a survey conducted by Teenage Research Unlimited (TRU) that found mothers underestimate the occurrence of underage drinking among their own daughters and do not converse with their daughters on this serious issue regularly. Designed to address the communication gap, ‘Girl Talk’ provides resources to stimulate the dialogue between mothers and daughters about and the specific risks facing teenage girls when it comes to drinking.
“Educating teenage girls and helping improve communication between parents and children about the dangers of alcohol are critical steps in combating underage drinking,” said Amy Elliott, Senior Director of State Government Relations, Diageo North America. “Diageo does not want the business of anyone under the legal drinking age. That is why we support programs like ‘Girl Talk’ that give kids the tools they need to make responsible and safe choices.”
Diageo is a founding member and major supporter of The Century Council, an organization committed to developing programs to combat drunk driving and underage drinking. These programs include “Ask, Listen, Learn,”"Cops in Shops,” and “Brandon Tells his Story.” The Century Council also works with a broad array of education and prevention professionals on alcohol issues.
