Heart and Soul Community Services needs your help!

The charitable group is asking for help in providing 700 children with new shoes and backpacks.

Their “Touch of Love” Back to School Giveaway takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Sunkist Elementary School, 935 Mayland Ave. in La Puente.

The event not only includes the giveaway of shoes and school supplies, but it also features entertainment, free back to school haircuts and much more.

Heart and Soul volunteers work tirelessly to assist all children in starting the school year on a level playing field, with clothes and school supplies needed to improve self-esteem.

A donation of as little as $12 can bring pride and self-worth to our at-risk youth.

Please be generous with your donations. Financial contributions can be mailed to Heart and Soul Community Services, Inc., 935 Mayland Ave., La Puente, CA 91746. Corporate sponsors are welcome. For information, call (626) 494-9615.

EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS

The city of Baldwin Park invites all members of the public to attend a panel discussion on earthquakes from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

The event takes place at City Council Chambers, 14403 E. Pacific Ave.

Panel members will discuss responses to a large earthquake and will answer questions on earthquake preparedness.

For information, call the city’s Emergency Services Coordinator at (626) 813-5219.

JUDICIAL FORUM TOWN HALL MEETING

One of the most difficult votes to cast in every election is for judges, as most citizens have little or no knowledge of those who are running for a judicial position.

Hacienda Heights resident Charles House has taken it upon himself to provide us with an opportunity to cast educated judicial choices in the November elections.

Mark your calendars for a Judicial Forum Town Hall Meeting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Steinmetz Park Community Room, 1545 S. Stimson Ave. in Hacienda Heights. Admission is free.

Eight judges have been invited to participate. Watch this column as the date approaches for a list of judges who have confirmed their attendance.

BREAKFAST CLUB

The congregation at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Hacienda Heights has an interesting way to help our local food bank, located at St. John Vianney Church, also in Hacienda Heights.

The last Sunday of every month, members of St. Matthew’s participate in the “Breakfast Club.” They bring boxes of breakfast cereal to their worship services.

These are then distributed to the needy in our community through the food bank, which provides a week’s worth of food to some 250 families each and every week. This contribution is greatly appreciated.

MERIT BADGE CLASSES

The Eastside Scout Shop in Covina invites all area Boy Scouts to its free badge classes, offered from October through March 2009. All classes are free.

Genealogy is offered Oct. 6, 13 and 20. Indian Lore is Nov. 3, 10 and 17. First Aid is Jan. 5, 7, 12 and 14. Safety is Feb. 9 and March 2.

Emergency Preparedness is March 16 and 30.

The time for all classes is 3:55 to 5 p.m. The Scouts should call for reservations — not their parents. Each Scout is asked to read the Merit Badge book before class and to bring the blue card with the Scoutmaster’s signature. Scouts must attend all dates to earn the badges and they should wear their class “A” uniform.

The Eastside Scout Shop is located at 305 E. Rowland St., Covina, 91723. For information or reservations, call (626) 331-4612. Reservations are accepted on a first come, first served basis.
