WASHINGTON, June 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Jack Ebeler, president and CEO of the Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP), issued the following statement today in reaction to the introduction of health care information technology and quality improvement legislation by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.):
"We commend Majority Leader Frist and Senator Clinton for addressing the challenge of encouraging the broader use of information technology in health care.
"Our goal is a system that delivers better care to patients. The widespread adoption of information technology puts real-time health care data at physicians' fingertips and facilitates collecting and reporting quality information that will create a new environment of transparency in health care.
"Information technology makes possible 'apples-to-apples' comparisons of health care quality information that empowers consumers to make informed health care choices and encourages health plans, doctors and hospitals to improve.
"The quality and cost of health care cannot truly be transformed without making sure that information technology is used effectively to benefit patients. As policymakers continue to examine ways to bring more of America's health care system online, they should challenge the entire system to improve along with those innovations."
