Consultant Hotline for GPs a Success

A HOTLINE set-up for GPs to get expert opinions from consultants 24 hours a day has been hailed by NHS Lothian.

The establishment of the line has coincided with 80 per cent of stroke patients at the Western General now being seen within seven days.

It means when someone attends a GP's surgery they can book an appointment by telephone, with the patient then usually being seen within a couple of days, and seek additional advice.

Research has shown that after a stroke, an additional one is most likely to take place within a week, increasing the importance of seeing a consultant early.

Thanks to the project's success, health bosses are now looking to expand the scheme to West Lothian and St John's Hospital.

An NHS statement said West Lothian patients could now benefit, adding: "This service continues to make a marked improvement in the appropriateness of referrals."
