Sutter Health Awards Nearly $900,000 in College Scholarships
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ — Sutter Health is helping pay the college tuition for hundreds of college students from Northern California. The not-for-profit health care network’s Van R. Johnson Sutter Scholars program awarded more than $879,000 this year to the children and grandchildren of Sutter Health employees.
“All of the scholarship recipients are talented and deserving students, who are making important contributions to their communities. We’re pleased to help make their college education more affordable,” said Patrick Fry, president and CEO of Sutter Health. “I wish them the best of luck.”
Nearly 900 students received scholarships, ranging from $500 to $4,000, for the 2008/2009 academic year.
“My two children realize it’s only because of assistance like the Van R. Johnson Scholarship that they have the opportunity to attend a college like Azusa Pacific University,” said Kathy Wesley, a senior business analyst at Sutter Health Support Services in Sacramento. “It’s yet another way that Sutter Health is looking out for its employees. Our whole family feels blessed.”
Since its inception, the program has awarded nearly 4,100 scholarships totaling more than $5.5 million to Northern California students. Sutter Scholars is named in honor of former longtime Sutter Health CEO Van Johnson and is administered by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. Educational grants are awarded annually to achieving students and awards vary based on need and competitive review.
