Hoana Medical to Present Clinical Findings on Early Warning Systems at Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses' Annual Convention

HONOLULU, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Hoana announced today that Chief Strategic Officer T. Heather Herdman, Ph.D., RN, and Chief Medical Officer Lawrence Burgess, M.D., will be co-presenting at the annual conference of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses in early October 2008 in Nashville. They will be presenting their clinical findings on "Nurse Satisfaction with an Automated Early Warning System Designed to Detect Patient Deterioration," a topic with incredible relevance in today's patient safety environment.
Drs. Herdman and Burgess lead the clinical team at Hoana Medical, the company which developed the patented LifeBed(TM) Patient Vigilance System technology that transforms any hospital bed into a "LifeBed," which invisibly tracks a patient's basic vital signs without any connection to the patient whatsoever. That means patients can simply rest in bed while the bedside unit detects their heart rate, respiratory rate and whether or not they are attempting to get out of bed, if fall risk is a concern. It's already been used on more than 15,000 individual acute care hospital patients around the U.S. and has resulted in hundreds of "interventions" -- providing a hospital patient a "new lease on life," that could have otherwise been lost.
"We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to present our findings at AMSN," said Dr. Herdman. "Research is an important component of what we do and our findings continue to show that nurses are supportive of early recognition of patients at risk through technology. Our results validate that the provision of objective data supports nursing clinical judgment and rapid intervention, making a big difference in patient safety. We are excited about these clinical findings as we see it supporting quality nursing practice, and accelerating adoption of this amazing technology."
Current vigilance technology is already supporting nurses in providing the safest patient care by alerting them to hospitalized patients that start to decompensate between nursing assessments. Something as simple as finding patients in trouble early makes an enormous difference in patient outcomes, and technology such as the LifeBed is clearly enhancing the effectiveness of rapid response teams nationwide -- it's the missing link to solving an enormous problem that touches 25 percent of Americans each year.
