What Are We Coming To?

I understand you are considering changing the Manawatu Standard paper deliveries by paper boys and girls to adults using scooters.

I am really disappointed to hear this, but even more incredulous is the reason given as to why: health and safety. Do you really believe it is too dangerous for our healthy, fit and motivated kids to deliver your papers each day? Spare me, please! As for an earlier and more reliable service, I have never felt my delivery was less than satisfactory.

What are we coming to? For as long as I can remember, young boys and girls have not had too many choices to earn their own pocket money while at the same time learning all those skills ta part-time job provides. Delivering the paper is often the very first job they have and is the beginning of their world of work.

Responsibility, punctuality, consideration of others and working as part of a team are all life skills learned on the job, not to mention managing money and learning to save.

Please Manawatu Standard, think long and hard about taking this opportunity away from 165 Manawatu young people.
