Apple Valley Medical Center to Hold Prostate Cancer Community Education Evening

What: A free prostate cancer community education evening 1. Attendees will be able to "test drive" the da Vinci(R) S Surgical System, robotic technology for minimally invasive surgery. This system is an alternative to traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, enabling surgeons to perform more complex procedures through very small incisions. For the patient, this means less pain and blood loss, shorter recovery time and, in many cases, a better clinical outcome. 2. Attendees will hear short presentations from the following experts at 5:30 and again at 7:00. -- Peter Sershon, MD, Metro Urology, "Innovations in Prostate Cancer Care" -- Kenneth Pallas, MD, Apple Valley Medical Clinic, "A Better You: Men's Health Care at 50 and Beyond" -- Kenneth Mitchell, PA, Metro Urology, "Sexual Health for Men" 3. Refreshments will be served. When: Tuesday, September 30, 2008, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Where: Apple Valley Medical Center 14655 Galaxie Avenue Apple Valley, MN 55124 Why: More than 186,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008, and 28,600 will die as a result, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Background: The Apple Valley Medical Center includes the independent Apple Valley Medical Clinic of 13 family practice physicians, serving patients from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., five days a week. In addition, there is a 24-hour Urgent Care Center and 26 specialty physicians seeing patients through the United Specialty Center. Specialists on the campus provide services in allergy and asthma; ankle and foot; cardiology; colon and rectal surgery; dermatology; ear, nose and throat; general surgery; low back & neck care; neurology; ob/gyn; ophthalmology; orthopedics; plastic surgery; podiatry and urology. The center also houses United Medical Imaging for digital mammography, ultrasound, CT and MRI scans; a full-service pharmacy; and physical medicine and rehabilitation care through Integrated Medical Rehabilitation.
