A DRUG used to treat schizophrenia has been effective in fighting the deadly virus Sars.
Cinanserin was found to inhibit the coronavirus that causes the flu-like severe acute respiratory syndrome.
The finding was announced by Chinese and European experts at a conference in China.
Sars killed 349 people in China and made thousands ill worldwide before subsiding in July 2003.
Cinanserin was among 15 drugs that appeared effective in preventing Sars but the other 14 have yet to undergo thorough testing.
Danish expert Peter Kristensen said: "Cinanserin could be directly prescribed to prevent the Sars disease or treat Sars patients if the fatal epidemic mounts a comeback."
