A Health Center for the Uninsured
A group of retired doctors and health-care professionals has launched a $5 million fund-raising campaign to support a new health center for the uninsured.
The Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative plans to open a medical office with six exam rooms in rented space in downtown Hackensack next May.
The center will be staffed by volunteer medical and social- service workers. Patients will need appointments, and Bergen County residents who meet the income guidelines will be seen for free.
The group has raised more than $400,000 so far, and received a grant from the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey. For more information, see bvmi.org.
