Men, women and children are being called on to wear pink clothing for a fundraising walk.

The event, in the grounds of Powderham Castle, near Exeter, is one of dozens taking place across the country throughout October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This year it is hoped to raise pounds30,000 for Cancer Research UK’s latest campaign – It’s a Girl Thing – topping money raised in previous events by about pounds10,000.

Money raised will go directly toward Breast Cancer Research UK, which last year spent around pounds25 million on investigating new ways to prevent and diagnose the disease, which affected the lives of 42,000 women last year alone.

Doctor Lesley Walker, director of information at Cancer Research UK, said: "Many women do no realise that the risk of cancer increases with age.

"A woman’s risk of developing cancer by the age of 30 is around one in 2000 – but by the age of 60 it has risen to around one in 25."

Participants in the walk will follow a route through the beautiful grounds of Powderham Castle, meandering gradually toward the Exe Estuary.

The walk will continue through woodlands, home to park deer, and will finally end up in front of the castle once more, where they will be greeted by a jazz band.

The event is open to anyone, and families in particular are recommended to register themselves for the worthy cause.

Those wanting to take part can register online at the website www.cancerrsearchuk.org/ breastcancer

Caroline Wood, who supported the event last year, said: "I would recommend it to anyone, and I am looking forward to getting out my walking boots this year."

The walk takes place on Sunday, October 12, and will start at 11am.
