Newborn Found in Trash Bin
Police in Kendall, Fla., say a newborn baby found in a trash bin behind a hospital is in good condition.
A janitor found the baby, with its umbilical cord attached, Monday night when he heard a cry from the bin behind Baptist Hospital, reported WFOR-TV, Miami.
The baby was hospitalized in good condition while police looked for its mother, who could have left the baby at the hospital under Florida’s “Safe Haven Baby Law,” WFOR-TV reported.
The law allows a parent to leave a newborn at a fire station or hospital anonymously without fear of prosecution. Since it was passed in 2001, 117 newborns have been left in safe conditions rather than in dangerous places where they aren’t likely to survive, police said.
