The Italian Pharmaceutical Market Experienced Poor Performance in 2007 Read More Inside the Italy Pharmaceuticals And Healthcare Report Q3 2008

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/99f4a5/italy_pharmaceutic) has announced the addition of the "Italy Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Report Q3 2008" report to their offering.

The Italy Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Report provides independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Italy's pharmaceuticals and healthcare industry

The Italian pharmaceutical market experienced poor performance in 2007. Following sub-1% annual growth during 2005 and 2006, the market eventually shrunk in 2007, which was largely as a result of successive price cuts during 2006. Repeated market contraction is not expected in local currency terms. BMI expects drug expenditure to show minimal growth during 2008-2012 reaching EU24.6bn, which equates to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.44%. Poor growth in local currency will be accentuated by a strengthening US/EUR exchange rate, leading to stagnation over the full forecast period in dollar terms.

Market expansion will be largely pushed forward by increased spending on OTC goods. Growth in the prescription sector will be characterised by increases in volume of prescriptions as well as the use of high price drugs such as oncology treatments, while increases in generic substitution and government scrimping will prevent the state drug bill from spiralling. BMI's new Burden of Disease Database ranks Italy as the 8th least healthy country in Western Europe. During 2008 5.9mn disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) will be lost with the majority accounted for by neuropsychiatric conditions and cardiovascular disease. This is similar to other Western European countries. While the disease burden will drop by 2030, we expect Italy to lose ground on its Western European neighbours, slipping to 10th position by 2030.

Company developments this quarter have seen Recordati build on its strong 2007 results after posting figures showing further growth in Q108. Meanwhile Newron Pharmaceuticals also acquired UK firm Hunter-Fleming after a long standing alliance between the two firms. Biotech firm Molmed has also begun trials for its leukaemia candidate which is being co-developed with Japanese firm Takara Bio.
