Tax Experts Offer Seminars
Tax experts from the state Department of Revenue will conduct free seminars at community college small-business centers.
The seminars will help entrepreneurs and small-business owners better understand state tax issues.The seminars will cover five topics: tax implications for starting a business; tax implications for expanding a business; the basics of sales and use tax; the basics of withholding taxes; and dealing with the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
The local schedule is as follows:
Roanoke-Chowan Community College, 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
College of The Albemarle, Elizabeth City, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 4
College of The Albemarle, Dare County, 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 5.

Installation service is Sunday
Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church will hold a pastoral installation service at 4 p.m. Sunday for the Rev. Travis T. Judkins.
Guest speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Fred J. Boddie Jr., pastor- emeritus of the historic First Baptist Church of Newport News. Music will be provided by the Cool Spring Missionary Baptist Church Mass Choir of Gaston.
Church plans homecoming
Shiloh Baptist Church will hold its homecoming celebrations beginning Saturday with the Back to Our Roots Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The festival will include games, exhibits and contests - including best Colonial costume, sawing and corn shucking. Brunswick stew and Colonial baked goods will be sold .
The homecoming celebration will continue Sunday with a service at 10:30 a.m. with a guest speaker. A covered-dish supper will continue with an afternoon session offering a church history skit and singing.
BIRDING Program offered at park
Dismal Swamp State Park will offer a 1.5-mile walk with a ranger to observe birds and learn how to get started in birding at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Walking shoes and bug spray are suggested. Field guides and binoculars will be provided. Registration is required and is limited to 10 people. Those participating should meet on the back deck of the visitor center.

Foundation to hold golf charity event
The Chowan Hospital Foundation Golf Charity Classic will be held Thursday at the Chowan Golf & Country Club.
The classic raises funds to address health care needs and enhance the health care status of the community.

ART OPENING set for Sunday
Carol Trotman's art show, "Of Southern Coasts," opens with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday in the Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park.
The exhibit can be viewed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays until Oct. 29.
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
The Outer Banks Hospital's Cancer Resource Center recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month during October.
The public is invited to honor or remember a woman who has had breast cancer by writing her name on a tag and placing it on the pink tree in the hospital lobby.

TRICK OR TREAT at the aquarium
Trick or Treat Under the Sea will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island . Tickets are available only in advance and cost $5 per person, or free for children 2 and under.

Rare example of needlework
The Museum of the Albemarle has a rare example of early 19th- century needlework: an 1821 sampler from Gates County that is signed, placed and dated.
The fragile nature of the sampler allows it to be on initial display at the museum only through Oct. 19.
Annual Walk for Hunger set
The Food Bank of the Albemarle will hold its 25th-anniversary Walk for Hunger at 2 p.m. Oct. 12, rain or shine.
Walkers will cover just over four miles from Charles Creek Park. In addition, there will be games for children, camaraderie and lunch.
Take part as a walker or be a team organizer or a sponsor for the event. This walk is the major fundraiser for the food bank. For each dollar raised, 5 pounds of food can be provided.
Claire Lynch to perform
The Rotary Club of Hertford is bringing bluegrass singer and songwriter Claire Lynch and her band for an evening of entertainment at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at Perquimans County High School Auditorium.
Tickets are $12 for regular seating and $18 for reserved. Reserved tickets are available only through Frank and Connie Jaklic at (252) 426-5246. General admission tickets are available from any Hertford Rotarian, Hertford Hardware and the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce or by calling (252) 426-5246.
Proceeds will benefit the Rotary Club of Hertford scholarship fund.
