Docs to Prescribe Self-Help

October 6, 2008

A SCHEME to help patients manage their mental health condition with self-help books is being promoted in Redcar and Cleveland.

Patients will see their GP but will be offered a book on prescription, if appropriate, which they can collect from a library.

The “Books on Prescription” scheme will run during October and November to help patients with mild to moderate conditions such as stress, depression, phobias and mood swings.

Lisa Atkinson from the psychological therapies team said “It allows patients to educate themselves and learn more about their problems and possible coping strategies.”

The scheme is a partnership between Redcar and Cleveland Council and Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust.

Judge Les Spittle gave Thompson a two-year community order with supervision and ordered him to complete an alcohol treatment programme.

The judge also ordered that the defendant live at his bail hostel address on The Crescent for at least three months, report there daily at 2pm and follow a 7pm-7am curfew.
