Connecticut's Universities Team Up to Host 2009 Stem Cell Symposium

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The StemCONN 09 stem cell symposium will bring the stem cell research community to New Haven, Conn., March 23 - 24, 2009.

Building on the successful StemCONN 07, which brought 700 scientists, business leaders and students to Hartford last year, StemCONN 09 will showcase the latest advances in stem cell research and their potential medical applications. Included in the two day event are scientific presentations by leading authorities, as well as sessions on the translation of scientific research to the clinic, emerging technologies and bioethics.

StemCONN 09 will include: -- A scientific session featuring presentations by Kevin Eggan Ph.D. and Konrad Hochedlinger Ph.D., both of Harvard University; Craig T. Jordan Ph.D., University of Rochester; Thomas A. Rando M.D., Ph.D., of Stanford University; Celeste Simon Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania, and Sally Temple Ph.D., Albany Medical Center. -- A session on bioethics organized by Lori Gruen Ph.D., of Wesleyan University in collaboration with Anne Hiskes Ph.D., of the University of Connecticut. -- A session on "Translation to Clinic" that will look at the opportunities and barriers to converting stem cell research to therapies as well as promising options for using stem cells for drug discovery.

With its 10-year, $100 million stem cell research grant program, Connecticut has emerged as an innovative leader in the field of stem cell research. The state is home to leading academic institutions specializing in this area, including Yale University, the University of Connecticut and Wesleyan University, providing a culture where national and international stem cell research partnerships develop, thrive and grow.

Organizing StemCONN 09 are Yale University, Wesleyan University and the University of Connecticut. Conference management is being provided by CURE (Connecticut United for Research Excellence), the Connecticut lifescience association. Also represented on the organizing committee are the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering and founding partners the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Connecticut Stem Cell Coalition.
