Turn Your Back on Traditional Facials
By Diane Parkes
THESE days there are hundreds of tailormade facials available at beauty spas and in local department stores. But how many are so tailor-made they can not only assess your complexion but also how it is being affected by your current state of health? Lying face down in the Decleor beauty rooms at Birmingham's House of Fraser, I was surprised to hear my therapist start discussing the state of my circulation and lungs. Surely I was just there for a relaxing facial?
But this is because Decleor treatments include not just a check of your skin but also what is known as a 'back diagnostic massage'.
Each treatment begins with a short back massage which reveals areas of heat to the therapist. From these 'hot spots' the therapist is then able to identify symptoms which not only affect your wellbeing but will also have effects on the skin.
So, for example, my therapist Tina pointed out areas of heat on my back which could indicate hormonal changes, poor circulation and even breathlessness - admittedly I had run to the appointment!
From this, she was then able to discuss the possible effects on my skin with breakouts, redness and dryness. Interestingly this discussion took place before I then turned over and she examined the skin itself.
Holistic in nature, the products then chosen are influenced by the factors indicated in the diagnostic massage. While Decleor's Aroma Therapy Centre offers a range of treatments, I had opted for the super plush House of Fraser Exclusive Aroma Facial. Lasting 90 minutes, it features cleansing, two firming masks, pressure point massage to the face and head plus back and foot massage.
All use Decleor's essential oils to offer not only relaxation but also nourishment for the skin.
And each treatment will differ depending on the results of the diagnostic massage. With neroli to hydrate, rose to calm, angelic to moisturise and ylang ylang to detox, the facial will be tailor-made depending not just on your skin type but also your state of health on that particular day and at that particular time.
As Tina explains: "Depending on the kind of day you are having, the back massage can reveal different things each time."
