Summer is just a few days old, and from June to September, York County offers a wealth of activities and events sure to interest even the hardest to please.
Mid-June means cherry picking and visitors to Shaw Orchards south of Stewartstown. Visitors can hitch a wagon ride to the orchards and enjoy a picnic under the trees while picking cherries for pies or to freeze.
For music and entertainment, check out Dreamwrights' Shakespeare Under the Trees, Jazz and the Big Band Sound at Naylor's Wine Cellars in Stewartstown and band concerts and special programs offered by a number of local parks throughout the summer.
Enjoy the Irish Festival to benefit Penn-Mar, take the kids to see robotic milking at Hope Acres Farm or catch the variety of car shows around the area.
July means fireworks. The first of the Fourth of July celebrations blasts off in New Freedom at one minute after midnight July 4. The fireworks are held in conjunction with the weeklong Lions' Carnival. It's just one of many carnivals and street fairs offered around the county all summer.
Sweet corn and peaches are ripe for the picking in July, and church suppers and Sunday school picnics are in full swing. Local parades are beginning to hit their stride, and the county parks offer a range of activities from star gazing and moonlight boating to walks on the rail trail and educational programs at area parks.
If tours are your thing, try the Hanover Shoe Farms, one of many garden tours, or get an inside peek at some of the area's factories and businesses, including Harley-Davidson and Family Heirloom Weavers. Also be sure to check out the famous Haines Shoe House.
Visit Central Market or one of the many historical sites. Picnic at Indian Steps in Airville or Wallace-Cross Mill in East Hopewell Township, or take advantage of one of the many summer garden tours in the area.
Horseback riding is available at Plantation Estates Stables near Fawn Grove, and the Mason Dixon Fair in July offers baking contests, tractor pulls, rides, entertainment and food. The motorcycle hill climbs near Jefferson offer something for those who like spills and thrills.
Kids can enjoy a number of activities through 4-H or be part of a summer Bible school program in one of the area's many churches. Join one of many reading clubs offered by local libraries or join a local Scout troop.
Spend an afternoon at one of the area's many playgrounds or parks, play a game of baseball, read and relax under the trees, or share an ice cream cone or an Italian ice.
Get together with friends to swim at an area pool or to enjoy an afternoon of water sports. There are lots of small streams for fishing and wading on a hot summer day.
Play a round at any of nearly two dozen golf courses, pitch a tent and cook over an open fire at one of several campgrounds, or fire up the backyard gas grill and invite family and friends to a cookout that features some of the area's best fresh fruits and vegetables. And don't forget to pick up something tasty for dessert from one of the area's bakeries or ice cream shops.

Take some time to have a picnic in a county park or fish in a lake or stream. In the photo above, Todd Learn of East Prospect stands below the Holtwood Dam and tries his luck at catching some fish.
