Rural Girls Get Together
Te Manawa Trust’s Lisa Foggin shows
Emma Gerke from Kimbolton how to break out of an arm grip.
They were at Girls’ Day Out, organised by the Manawatu Rural Support Services for rural girls aged 13 to 15.
The girls came from Manawatu and Rangitikei and most live in rural areas, but a few brought city-dwelling friends.
Organiser Judy Jack said the day was about young women feeling good about themselves.
As well as covering skin care, make-up, hair and clothing, the girls also had a module on self-defence, learning to punch, hit with their elbows and fight to get away from an attacker.
The group watched the demonstration, then had a go.
