Free Health Screenings for Women
New parks facility manager appointedDennis McGinnis has been selected facility manager for the National Park Service Outer Banks Group, which includes Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Wright Brothers National Memorial and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.
McGinnis, a native of Manteo, has more than 30 years experience maintaining and operating national park facilities, roads and trails. He will start his new position in mid-November.
Event aims to fight poverty, hunger
The Peace and Justice Interfaith Coalition of Dare County will present a Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty (CROP) film and will discuss stopping hunger at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church.
Information about the CROP Walk scheduled for Oct. 19 and other local efforts to fight hunger will be provided.
Mobile food pantry set for thursday
The Food Bank of the Albemarle, the North Gates Charge MFP and Gates County churches will sponsor a Mobile Food Pantry grocery distribution at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Gates County Community Center, 130 U.S. 158 W.
Free groceries will be given to the first 150 families. You must have an ID showing Gates County residency. Bring boxes or containers to carry food home.
Volunteers and sponsors are needed.
Roadways to close for fire training
The Elizabeth City Fire Department will be conducting live burn training at 8 a.m. Wednesday at 103 Pinewood Ave.
The corner at Pinewood and Southside avenues will be closed.
roast to benefit veterans
The first Famous Franks Bull and Oyster Roast will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at 225 S. Hughes Blvd.
The event will include food, beverages and entertainment. Proceeds will benefit outreach programs and assistance for veterans and their families.
Tickets cost $25 in advance, $30 at the door for ages 21 and up. Tickets can be bought at Blue Lion Apparel; the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce; Famous Franks Hot Dogs & Grille; Montero's Restaurant; Nationwide Insurance-Bembridge Agency, Camden office; Nationwide Insurance-Weatherly Agency; and Veterans Family Resource Center.

[email protected] CHOWAN COUNTY | Chowan Hospital will hold the annual LifeSpan Women's Health Fair from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Edenton United Methodist Church, next to the hospital.
There will be free screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, body fat analysis, bone density, spine health, glaucoma and skin cancer. There also will be giveaways and health information.
The public is invited to attend.
