Let the Tension Slip Away With a Thai Massage

October 14, 2008

By MARIA CROCE

THE pleasant smell of herbs filled the treatment room as my therapist used a warm lemongrass poultice to massage away tension.

Heated herbal cushions were placed on my legs and body as part of the Kamala Signature Treatment – specially designed for Edinburgh’s Balmoral Spa by Ytsara. Meaning freedom in Thai, Ytsara is a luxurious organic skincare and spa programme and seemedgeared to freeing me from the concerns of everyday life.

My therapist began my treatment by washing my feet in a bowl as part of a soothing Thai ritual.

Then I lay down to relax as she went to work on my body and face. The treatment was an unusual combination of Royal Thai massage on my legs, back and arms, mixing in a herbal poultice, together with the herbal cushions.

It left me feeling relaxed and beginning to nod off to sleep while my therapist gave me a full facial using green tea and jasmine products to nourish and rejuvenate the skin.

During the 90 minutes I felt like I had been transported to another world and my skin was radiant.

I retreated to the relaxation suite with an organic herbal tea to flick through some glossy magazines.

The treatment included access to the spa, so I then headed over to the poolside for a dip and a chance to try out the saunas.

I lounged around in luxury, eating lunch by the pool in my fluffy robe and finding it difficult to believe I was just below the hustle and bustle of Princes Street.
