Stephen M. Weiner Receives Award for Best Practices in Medicine From Massachusetts Medical Law Report

October 15, 2008

Massachusetts Medical Law Report has announced the winners of its Rx for Excellence Awards, to be presented on October 31, 2008. Stephen M. Weiner, Chair of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C.’s Health Law Section, will receive an award as one of Massachusetts’ “Leaders in Quality.”

As described in Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, the Rx for Excellence Awards will honor the people and places of Massachusetts health care that demonstrate the highest standards in risk management, regulatory compliance, safety and quality. Mr. Weiner is being recognized for his pioneering work relating to limited-service clinics and the budding medical tourism industry. According to the Medical Law Report, he is “at the forefront of these controversial sources of care, counseling providers and facilitators to ensure patient safety.”

Mr. Weiner has extensive experience in the health care field as a policy maker, educator and attorney. He works with providers in undertaking strategic positioning; structuring payor strategies and clinical integration initiatives; mergers, acquisitions, strategic affiliations, “demergers,” and joint venture arrangements. He also assists in the structuring and monitoring of relationships between hospitals and physicians; and handles a wide variety of regulatory and reimbursement matters including licensure, certificate of need, Medicare reimbursement and appeals, and Medicaid and uncompensated care pool reimbursement. He has been involved in a number of international health care activities, while also taking an active local role with regard to the development and implementation of Massachusetts’ signature health care reform program.

Currently, Mr. Weiner serves as President of the HealthWell Foundation, the largest foundation in the United States providing financial support for insured persons whose coverage is inadequate for their high cost medical treatments. He is one of the three members of the Integrated Licensing Board for the Dubai Healthcare City, and is on the Advisory Board of the Medical Tourism Association. Mr. Weiner is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at Suffolk University School of Law, where he teaches a course on corporate transactions in the health care field.

The Rx for Excellence awards ceremony and breakfast will take place on October 31, 2008 at the Taj Boston. For more information, visit www.mamedicallaw.com.
