The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating whether the chairman of a panel about to make a ruling on the safety of bisphenol A has been compromised.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday that regulators are investigating whether Martin Philbert, chairman of the FDA subcommittee that is reviewing an earlier FDA ruling on the safety of the controversial industrial chemical, properly disclosed a large donation.
Philbert received $5 million for the University of Michigan's Risk Science Center, which he founded and co-directs, the newspaper reported.
"We have no reason to believe that Dr. Philbert has done anything other than act in good faith on this matter," said FDA spokesman Michael Herndon.
The donation was made by Charles Gelman, a retired medical supply manufacturer who was once identified by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources as that state's second-worst polluter.
