Health: Fit for Life - Togetherness - in the Gym

Posted on: Wednesday, 29 June 2005, 12:00 CDT

IF YOU heed the latest research then you really do not have any excuses for not keeping fit.

And, according t o scientists, exercising with a friend ensures you reap the most benefits.

So you no longer have to go it alone t o the gym - you can make this a real social occasion.

In a survey of gym users it was found that those who exercised with a friend lost 33% more weight when compared with people who exercised alone.

The research also found that men who regularly exercised with someone else consistently lifted heavier weights.

Exercising with someone else can also be a great motivator as you are far less likely to make excuses for not going to the gym if in the back of your mind you know you will be letting someone else down.

It is, however, important to choose your training buddy with care.

Exercising with a friend who is not as fit as yourself may make you lazy as you are not as likely to work as hard.

The key is to find a training partner who is of similar fitness levels so you can push yourselves to the limit and reap the rewards which should follow.

THE news we have all been waiting for - it is healthy to be fat!

Latest research shows that moderately overweight people who diet in the hope of improving their health die younger than those who remain fat.

The reasoning behind the findings is that the physiological and metabolic stresses associated with weight loss could be so great that they outweigh the benefits of being thinner.

The research was carried out in Finland and found that weight loss by overweight but otherwise healthy people could be 'hazardous' in the long term.
