Riverside Medical Clinic Begins Construction on $27 Million Patient Care Building

Scrambling to keep pace with burgeoning patient demand, Riverside Medical Clinic formally launched a building and renovation program yesterday with the groundbreaking of a $27 million, four-level medical building that will be the flagship of a new patient care campus at Brockton Avenue and Dixon Drive, according to Steven E. Larson, M.D., chairman and chief executive officer of the 100-physician medical group headquartered here.
"Today we enter a new era in the 70-year history of our medical group," Larson said. "Riverside Medical Clinic has outstanding talent and the latest technology, but some of our facilities have become outdated and we also need to expand physically to accommodate the recruitment of 23 physicians over the next 4 years."
Planned as the main aspect of a phased building and renovation program, the new medical building will provide adult medicine and primary care services and will include a women's center, a cancer center, cardiology, orthopedics, dermatology, plastic surgery, eye care and diagnostic imaging. Three stories high, the building also will include a lower level for imaging, medical library, community health education classrooms, alternative medicine and medical records.
According to Larson, the new building will allow consolidation of existing clinical departments and services currently located in four existing buildings and also will enable the expansion of select patient care programs. Initially, 57 physicians will provide care at the new facility, which also will allow medical office space for the 23 new physicians the group will recruit by 2009.
Sized at 130,000 square feet, the building is situated on more than six acres and is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2006. Architect and general contractor for the project is Marshall Erdman & Associates of Madison, Wis., specialists in health care facility design and construction. The following phase of the new patient care campus will include the construction of additional parking and renovation of other adjacent clinical and administrative offices, plus the construction of an additional outpatient surgery suite.
Designed in the Mission style, the patient care building will highlight natural materials and Craftsman-style accents in wood and granite. A two-story fountain extending from the lower level through the main level is a focal point of the interior, which is planned to provide a soothing ambiance and a healing atmosphere, Larson said.
Riverside Medical Clinic is a group of 113 physicians and 648 clinical and administrative personnel providing adult and pediatric primary and specialty health care. The clinic operates four regional medical facilities, the main patient care campus in Riverside and community health clinics in Corona, Jurupa Valley and Canyon Springs/Moreno Valley.
