Genetic Test Detects Inherited Disorders

British scientists said a new genetic test can screen embryos for almost any known genetic disease in embryos that are just days old.

The Times of London said the “genetic MoT” test will allow couples at risk of passing on gene defects to conceive healthy children using IVF treatment. Currently, only 2 percent of the 15,000 known genetic conditions can be identified through early testing.

The test, developed at the Bridge Centre in London, involves creating embryos by in vitro fertilization and removing a single cell when the embryos are 2 days old. The cells are then tested using a technique known as karyomapping, the newspaper said.

Researcher Alan Handyside is applying to Britain’s Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority for a license to use the test, which will cost about $2,300.

The Times said the test is expected to spur ethical debate over the creation of “designer babies.”
