Axis Three Announces Predictive Surgical Simulation in New York for First Time

October 27, 2008

The Portrait 3D Surgical Simulation Platform, developed by Axis Three(R) of Santa Monica, CA, has been introduced into the plastic surgery office of Dr. David Rapaport this week in New York City. The Portrait 3D is based on breakthrough image capture and simulation technology, and enables surgeons to show a patient what they will look like after breast augmentation surgery.

The Portrait 3D system platform photographs a patient’s body before her breast procedure, captures linear and volumetric measurements, and creates an exact three dimensional replica of her body on screen. Dr. Rapaport examines this model with the patient during consultation, and performs breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, or post-mastectomy breast reconstruction on the 3D model to visualize the expected result in advance of an actual surgical procedure. The photo-realistic result can be viewed from all angles, and implant size adjusted to most closely meet the patient’s needs. This allows women for the first time to select implant size, shape, and position based on the expected outcome on their own body. Until now, patients have depended primarily on the surgeon’s judgment and recommendations alone, supported by his or her reputation, results on photographs of past patients, and their own appearance with various implant sizes placed in their bra.

Dr. Rapaport believes the Portrait 3D simulation system will enhance the consultation experience for women by allowing them to proceed with surgery feeling more confident about their choices. “Consultations will be more interactive. Many patients express significant anxiety about implant size before breast augmentation, and are fearful of still being too small after the procedure, or ending up too large and obvious. By visualizing the result with different implant sizes in advance, women will be more relaxed. Usually, I understand what patients want, but the Portrait 3D will further clarify and document the desired result, and may help me to more precisely achieve that result,” says Dr. Rapaport. “Many patients have been loyal to me, and have come to expect the most advanced surgical techniques and the best products in my office. We see hundreds of breast augmentation patients a year, and can truly elevate the standard of care for women by improving communication during the pre-surgical planning stage.
