Stanford Hospital & Clinics has announced the appointment of Daniel Ginsburg as its new chief operating officer, effective January 12, 2009. Ginsburg succeeds Michael Peterson, whose retirement as the hospital's COO was announced in June, 2008.
Ginsburg is currently senior vice president for Cancer and Women's Programs at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he also serves as president and chief operating officer of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization. The 900-bed Massachusetts General Hospital is the oldest and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. Ginsburg has held leadership positions at Massachusetts General for the past 14 years, including chairing the Partners Healthcare System Executive Committee on Process Improvement and serving as the hospital's process improvement champion.
"Dan's breadth of expertise in key strategic and operating roles at a leading academic medical center, combined with his knowledge of physician issues and track record in managing complex business and financial matters, make him an outstanding addition to the leadership team at Stanford Hospital," said President and CEO Martha Marsh.
Ginsburg received a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1987 and Bachelor of Arts in biology from Harvard College in 1983. He began his career at the Boston Consulting Group, where he later served as senior manager of the firm's healthcare practice. In 1994, he became chief operating officer of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization as it was being formed. Today the multi-specialty group practice has patient service revenue of $1.2 billion and employs 1,600 physicians.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to be part of the team that will fully realize the tremendous potential that exists at Stanford," Ginsburg said. "I come from an environment in which physicians and hospital leaders work very closely together and look forward to working with the caliber of outstanding leaders at all levels who are committed to Stanford Hospital's future. The plans for Stanford Medical Center are unparalleled in their potential impact."
Ginsburg joins Stanford Hospital as it moves forward with the planning and design of a new 600-bed inpatient facility, to be built adjacent to the existing hospital, and as it prepares to open its new Stanford Medicine Outpatient Center in Redwood City in February 2009.
A native of Boston, 47-year-old Ginsburg is married and has two children, an 18-year-old freshman at Pitzer College and 21-year-old junior at Guilford College. His wife Laura Lechner is pursuing a master's in education.
