Essure(R) Reports 25 Percent Growth in Essure-Trained Physicians in 2008

Conceptus, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPTS), a leader in the design, development and marketing of innovative women's healthcare has announced a 25 percent growth in 2008 in Essure-trained physicians, the largest number of new physicians in a single year since the launch in 2002.
Clinical data for the Essure procedure has shown 99.8 percent effectiveness in preventing pregnancy after five years of follow-up and is becoming increasingly popular with physicians as it can be performed in under a half hour without general anesthesia or incisions. It is the only procedure that has had zero pregnancies in clinical trials.
"It is evident that the Essure procedure is today's - and tomorrow's - answer to permanent birth control. The procedure has an extremely high patient satisfaction rating and is simply the best choice for a woman who knows that she is done having children," said Obstetrics and Gynecologist Dr. Barbara Levy.
Using a hysteroscopic approach, the Essure micro-insert is placed in the proximal section of each fallopian tube lumen and expands upon release, acutely anchoring itself in the fallopian tube. The micro-insert subsequently elicits a benign natural tissue response. Tissue in-growth into the micro-insert permanently anchors the device and occludes the fallopian tube, resulting in sterilization which is confirmed by a very low pressure hysterosalpingogram test (Essure Confirmation Test) three months after the procedure.
In the United States approximately 7.5 million women are on some form of temporary birth control yet have no plans to grow their families.
"Essure is the perfect solution for women considering a permanent, more effective option. No pregnancies were reported in women who participated in the Essure clinical trial after up to 9 years of follow up, making it an outstanding choice for anyone that knows that their family is complete," said Mark Sieczkarek, President and CEO of Conceptus. "It is exciting to us that more and more physicians are recognizing the benefits of Essure for their patients. We look forward to fostering these new relationships and expanding even more in the years to come."
Celebrating the sixth year of FDA approval for its Essure procedure, Essure physicians are contributing 24 presentations at this year's AAGL (American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists) conference in Las Vegas. Additionally, a cyber cafe located at the Conceptus booth will have a physician locator, and allows attendees to learn more about the procedure, building a patient practice and bringing the Essure procedure in-office.
Mark Sieczkarek, president and CEO of Conceptus, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPTS) is also available for briefings during the AAGL Conference to discuss the changing face of the birth control industry and recent studies that have been published indicating there is an increased need for education in the OB/GYN community.
