Texas Health Care Provider Buys OK-Based Physician Direct Network

Posted on: Thursday, 30 June 2005, 21:01 CDT

HealthSmart Preferred Care of Lubbock, Texas, has acquired Physician Direct Network, an Oklahoma-based managed care organization.

HealthSmart, with more than 750,000 members, is the largest independent-owned preferred provider organization in the Southwest.

HealthSmart's acquisition of Physician Direct Network, known as PDN, was completed June 22.

HealthSmart Preferred Care is a nationwide PPO, founded in 1993.

PDN specializes in a PPO program that has a network of 4,500 contracted physicians, hospitals and others in Oklahoma. PDN uses a model that combines a pay-for-performance incentive system and evidence-based medicine in an effort to keep down costs for employers and insurers.

We are very excited about the opportunity this expansion provides us in terms of serving the greater Oklahoma market, David Adams, CEO of HealthSmart, said in a statement. The acquisition complements the quality of HealthSmart's strong regional presence. We are confident that the merger and our commitment to the state will result in enhanced access to high-quality medical care for those insured plan members of the Oklahoma region.

PDN members and clients will join in the national HealthSmart Preferred Care PPO network.

Jim Dempster, president of PDN, said HealthSmart will bring added resources and expertise to the market. We are very excited about our new relationship with HealthSmart. This relationship will help take Physicians Direct to the next level by providing increased provider relations and customer service.

Physician Direct PPO is a system founded in 2001 and developed by the Central Oklahoma Physician Alliance and CompONE.
